When it comes to medications, a drug that works well for one person may not work well for another. North Shore has developed a pharmacogenomic test that ensures their patients are getting the right drug at the right dose, at the right time. Adler was tasked with designing an intuitive system that makes the DNA sampling process as simple as possible. The structural kit provides everything you need to collect and submit your DNA sample to NorthShore. Everything is designed to make it easier to use and understand. We included a drying station, timer and step by step instructions.

Our goal was to change the way nurses use the dressings to improve health outcomes. We developed a clear and comprehensive system across hundreds of products so nurses now get a 2-minute course in wound care right at the patients bedside. The new design was tested in an independent study, and there was an 88% increase in compliance! The packaging reduces confusion, speeds up healing, and helps the nurse teach the patient how to use the bandage at home. Large photos of the dressing help identify and reduce waste of opening the wrong pouch.

Through research in the gemba, we discovered key factors in promoting a positive patient experience; quietness of environment, overall cleanliness and patient/care team interaction. We created a series of simple, customizable CarePacs (QuietPac, ComfortPac and WellnessPac) to both enhance and target these key aspects of the patient experience, as well as strengthen brand equity.

Medline’s Surgical Trays

September 21st, 2013

Deborah Adler

Here our gemba is hospital operating rooms, following the life stories of Surgical Procedure Trays (SPT). There’s a different tray for every operation, but they all basically look alike and you can’t tell them apart. They’re bulky and blue, and stored in Central Sterile Supply. Oftentimes the scrub tech pulls and opens the wrong one – One little thing, and there goes an expensive tray that can’t go to the OR. We set out to eliminate confusion, increase efficiency, reduce waste and decrease the risk of accidental latex exposure. From color coding procedure categories to clearly designed inserts, this new system is designed to be intuitive and easier to manage.

Deborah had the distinct pleasure of working for Milton Glaser for 5 fulfilling years. These are some highlights of the work she did with Milton for Stony Brook University. The cafe features 5 different Asian cuisines. They used enlarged photos of Asian veggies as a decorative motif. They designed a complex signage system for Kenneth P. Lavalle Foodball Stadium at the University. She worked on a number of undergraduate bulletins, using visual relationships, they were able to make connections of some classes offered in the bulletin and visualize them on to the covers. She also loved to work on commencement covers, where they picked an inspirational quote and visualized it.

Medline’s Oral Care Packaging

September 21st, 2013

Deborah Adler

Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is the second most common hospital-acquired infection. We spent a lot of time in the gemba, on floors with ventilated patients. We learned that oral care kits were difficult to use, they were loud, you had to pull them apart, and there was no clear indication if someone else had already performed the oral care. So we re-thought the structure and made it like a Pez dispenser. You pull the bottom one out with a little finger-notch and the next in line falls in place for next time. This intuitive approach to packaging makes it easier to stay on track with oral care protocols.
